Evaluative Essay: Hip Hop
Hip Hop Music is viewed as a popular genre in today’s society and perhaps it is. Fans of
various types of music should determine which are good. With assurance, I feel that Hip Hop
is a unique genre of music due to creativity and brilliant mixing of other types of genres. For
example, the Blues originated from the area of the South by using harmonicas, drums, trumpets,
and jovial singers to experiment. The origins of Hip Hop can be seen within these types of
music; therefore, they must have been influenced by the Blues or even from the days of Harlem
Renaissance. In an article about hip hop history Henry Adaso explains, “Some of the earliest rap
songs ever recorded include “King Tim III (Personality Jock)” by Fatback Band and “Rapper’s
Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang. The latter reached the #36 spot on the Billboard charts (a huge
feat by 1970’s standards), thus demonstrating hip-hop’s ability to draw commercial appeal.”
Those are some examples of the early music of hip hop, and today the music has changed a bit
towards subjects such as money, drugs, and violence. Some may agree that Hip hop is a bad
influence; however, to me it all depends on how the artist’s intends to portray their message.
